GoTyme raises 2026 customer target to 12.5 million

GoTyme Bank has raised its year-end customer target to 12.5 million as faster account openings and expanding lending activities fuel the digital lender’s growth, keeping it on track to turn profitable in 2027.

Context & Analysis

In Philippine banking, the race to acquire customers has always been only half the battle. The harder part is turning those relationships into disciplined credit while keeping funding costs manageable. That is the test now facing digital lenders such as GoTyme Bank, which are trying to move from being convenient savings platforms to becoming serious sources of loans for households and small businesses.

The opportunity is real because the Philippines still has a large underbanked population. Many Filipinos have smartphones, e-wallets and transaction histories, but they lack collateral or formal credit files that traditional banks can easily evaluate. A digital bank can use alternative data to assess repayment capacity more quickly, potentially bringing loans to freelancers, micro-entrepreneurs and online sellers who would otherwise borrow from informal lenders at steep costs. For consumers, the appeal is speed and simplicity; for small businesses, it may mean faster working capital during peak seasons or unexpected expenses.

But scale alone does not guarantee quality earnings. When account openings accelerate, banks must ensure that new borrowers are genuinely creditworthy, not simply attracted by easy approval. A loan book built too quickly can show early revenue but later reveal higher provisions if households stretch their budgets or if small businesses face weak demand. That risk becomes more sensitive in a high-rate environment, where deposit competition raises funding costs and borrowers become less able to absorb higher interest payments.

Regulators will pay attention because the stakes go beyond one bank’s balance sheet. The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas must support financial inclusion while enforcing identity verification, anti-money laundering rules, data privacy standards and responsible lending practices. Investors should watch deposit mix, loan yields, asset quality and operating discipline rather than user counts alone. If digital lenders can expand credit carefully, they can deepen the country’s financial system; if they cannot, they may simply spread risk more widely.
